Suffering Samurai

a Japanese twist on the classic cocktail

This is what you get down on after a looong night of pounding highballs while karaoking through Shinjuku and that bowl of Ichiran ramen on the way home wasn’t quite enough to protect you from a mighty hangover.

Enter the Suffering Samurai, our lil twist on the Suffering Bastard created by legendary bartender Joe Scialom at the Shepheard Hotel in Cairo—that man was definitely the original “Most Interesting Man in the World.” We found the recipe right after a trip to Japan, so naturally, we wanted to incorporate some Japanese ingredients that would play well with the other flavors AND transport us back to one of our favorite places.

INGREDIENTS:
1 oz gin (@suntory_rokugin)
1 oz brandy (@copperandkings)
1/2 oz yuzu juice
1/4 oz shiso syrup
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Ginger beer
Garnish: shiso leaf, @surfsidesips straw

DIRECTIONS:
Combine all ingredients except for the ginger beer in a shaker. Add ice and shake for 10 seconds. Pour and strain into a Collins glass filled with cubed ice. Top off with ginger beer then garnish with shiso leaf.
